Growing Up

Have you ever seen a child carry responsibility before even starting school?

This is my real story.

I’m Safa from Darfur, Sudan.

At six years old, I was not carrying toys — I was carrying a heavy water container on my head. I walked long distances to bring water to my family. While other children were playing, I was learning how to be strong. Life did not wait for me to grow up. It made me grow up early.

I helped my mother with everything. Responsibility was not a choice; it was my reality. Those long walks under the sun, carrying water for my family, taught me discipline, patience, and resilience.

Because of that, I stand before you today as a serious, ambitious, and determined young woman. I may be the same age as many of you, but my experiences shaped me differently. Life was my first teacher, and it taught me lessons that no classroom could ever fully teach — strength, gratitude, and perseverance.

My past did not break me. It built me.
